We’ll eliminate illegal miners within one month if you give us the mandate – GNASSM to gov’t
The Ghana National Association of small scale miners(GNASSM) are calling on the government of Ghana to give them power to combat illegal mining popularly known as galamsey in the country.
It could be recalled that, the fight against galamsey activities in various communities in the country has been a major priority of President Akufo-Addo ever since he assumed office in 2016.
It’s obvious that illegal miners are destroying the rich lands and water bodies despite the deployment of operation vanguard and operation halt (soldiers) to stop these illegal miners.
In spite of this the GNASSM says “Give us half of the money you have disbursed to the soldiers (operation halt), we promise you, we will fight and eliminate illegal miners in the country within one month.”
Mr Sampson Kofi Wiredu, Vice President of the association who spoke at a “dialogue between GNASSM and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources” explained that, there are blocked out areas the minerals commission of Ghana has reserved for small and large scale miners therefore it will be very easy to communicate with GNASSM if they are giving the power to fight illegal miners.
According to him, the association has representatives at the districts level, zonal level and in all the mining communities therefore will deploy its taskforce who will be staged to live permanently in the mining communities to combat and eliminate the illegal miners.
He said, members of the association are poised to fight against illegal mining therefore the government should support them.
He clarified that, no GNASSM member is mining in the forests as it is been speculated.
