DSP Azuku withdrawn from National Security and reassigned – Interior Minister
The Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery, has disclosed that the Police Officer who was at the center of the violence which characterized the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, has been withdrawn from the Ministry of National Security and reassigned within the Police Service.
The Minister made the disclosure on the Floor of Parliament on Thursday, July 8, 2021 in an answer to a Parliamentary question filed by the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Henry Norgbey. He wanted to know why the Police Officer was still at post.
“The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Kojo Azugu has since 27th May, 2021 been recalled by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) from the Ministry of National Security and duly reassigned within the Ghana Police Service,” the Minister disclosed.
The Emil Short Commission recommended that the revocation of the secondment of DSP Azugu to the Ministry of National Security as the Head of the SWAT Team after he was indicted for unprofessional conduct which led to the violence at the Ayawaso by-elections where some persons were hospitalized and an MP slapped.
Despite the recommendation by the Commission of Inquiry led by Emil Short, DSP Azugu remained at the National Security Ministry until recently where he has again been cited in an incident involving the arrest and manhandling of two journalists in Accra for filming cars at a restricted security zone.
